In keeping with our mission and vision statement, Maryville actively seeks adjunct faculty members who are experts in their fields and have a passion for teaching and building online courses. Adjunct faculty are an integral part of the University’s learning community and teach courses online and/or on campus.

The College of Arts and Sciences is accepting applications for an academically qualified adjunct faculty member to develop an online version of:

SUST 201 - Environmental Science and Health

Course Description: This course examines the environmental quality and human health effects associated with human activities.) It covers the health issues, scientific understanding of causes, and possible future approaches to control the major environmental health problems in industrialized and developing countries. Topics include how the body reacts to environmental pollutants; physical, chemical, and biological agents of environmental contamination; vectors for dissemination (air, water, soil); solid and hazardous waste; susceptible populations; biomarkers and risk analysis; the scientific basis for policy decisions; and emerging global environmental health problems.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  1. Define the major sources of and types of environmental agents.
  2. Discuss the transport and fate of these agents in the environment.
  3. Identify the carriers or vectors that promote the transfer of these agents from the environment to the human.
  4. Describe how these agents interact with biological systems, and the mechanisms by which they exert adverse health effects.
  5. Explain and use models for prediction of the magnitude of adverse effects in biological systems.
  6. Identify and define the steps in the risk-assessment and risk-management processes.
  7. Describe the steps in the regulatory process in terms of risk assessment and risk management and identify current legislation and regulation regarding environmental issues.
  8. Identify significant gaps in the current knowledge base concerning the health effects of environmental agents and identify areas of uncertainty in the risk-assessment process. 

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Develop SUST 201 as an online course partnering with the Learning Design Team and the College of Arts and Sciences
  • After successful completion of course development, each assigned course as specified in the schedule and course contract.
  • Participate in welcome orientation to become familiar with the University’s mission, academic policies and procedures, expectations, and Canvas (Learning Management System).
  • Prepare essential learning objectives, lesson plans, and assignments. Develop course syllabus.
  • Clearly communicate course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, and assignments and deadlines.
  • Employ a variety of teaching styles in order to effectively deliver course content demonstrating both academic and real-world applications of concepts covered.
  • Encourage active learning through discussion topics, class assignments, group projects, etc.
  • Provide feedback and grade assignments in a timely and thorough manner (with 24-36 hrs.).
  • Establish office hours to provide additional assistance with student questions/concerns.
  • Report early alerts for students who are not actively engaging in the course.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters in Environmental Science

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Environmental Science
  • Online teaching experience and/or online course development
