POSITION AT A GLANCE:
ESA seeks a full-time Editor in Chief for the ESA’s premier journal on communicating ecological science. Frontiers is an important ESA member publication and accessed by thousands of academic institutions around the world. For readers, it is a clear, accessible publication with broad interdisciplinary appeal. Each issue contains high-impact research articles and reviews, breaking news (domestic and international), editorials, and special features.  For the right candidate, this position is an opportunity to use your skills as a scientist, editor and writer to serve and energize the ecological community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Publish 10 print and online issues per year, consisting of peer-reviewed research articles, news, several departments (editorials, EcoPics, and Lifelines), and series.
  • Set the tone and determine the content of the publication.  Commission research articles, reviews, and other content. Oversee the peer review process, and allocate submissions to Editorial Board members and subject matter experts.
  • Find and develop new content (special issues, new series, etc.)
  • Manage a small editorial staff and work together with ESA staff and Wiley, our publisher, to efficiently and accurately publish Frontiers.
  • Oversee the day-to-day production of the publication, especially the creation, updating, and development of content, covers, house ad designs, and article order

REQUIREMENTS:

  • PhD in the natural sciences and a working knowledge of ecology, environmental science, or conservation is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years of editorial experience including in a senior position. Familiarity with journal editorial processes and a strong commitment to excellence. We seek a candidate who can be productive right away, based on their previous experience and knowledge of editorial processes.
  • An ability to edit copy, understand copy-editing concepts and ways of doing things. Production and supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple priorities to deliver issues on time and to a high standard.

  • Ability to work remotely. Some travel is required:  represent the journal at the ESA Annual Meeting and occasionally at other scientific meetings, travel to visit staff at ESA headquarters.
