TIER II CANADA RESEARCH CHAIR

 

The Vice-Rector of Teaching, Research, and Creation at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT) is seeking exceptional candidates for a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Historical Ecology associated with a tenure-track faculty position. Tier II Chairs, tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead their field.

The Chair's research program must be structured around one or more research themes related to the reconstruction of the dynamics and composition of forest landscapes during the Holocene (through, for example, palynology, dendrochronology, anthracology, ancient DNA, historical archives or geochemistry). Results from the research program should eventually be applied in sustainable land use planning by using knowledge of past ecological processes to predict the future ecosystem trajectories. The start date is scheduled for the spring of 2022. The successful candidate will be an active member of the Forest Research Institute (https://www.uqat.ca/uqat/departements/irf/) and associated with the International Cold Forest Research Laboratory (https://forets-froides.org/en/irn/irn-cold-forests/), located at the Lake Duparquet Research and Teaching Forest Research Station (https://ferld.uqat.ca/missionE.htm).

Candidates must have held a PhD degree (PhD with a specialization in historical or paleoecology) for less than 10 years and must demonstrate exceptional potential to gain a significant international reputation within the next five years. They must be fluent in French and English or fluent in English and intend to learn French. Applicants will be expected to propose an innovative and high-quality research program, specifically on cold forests, that will attract research funding from granting agencies and is likely to attract excellent graduate students. The successful candidate must be willing and able to collaborate with the faculty members in the department in which she/he will be working. The successful candidate will also be expected to demonstrate an interest in interdisciplinary and international collaborations.

The different tasks associated with this position are research, graduate teaching (MSc and PhD), university administration, and supervision of MSc and PhD students.

Appointments under the Canada Research Chairs program must be submitted to the program secretariat and the appointment to a chair may not be conducted without the agreement of the Secretariat (see the Regulations of the Canada Research Chairs https://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/program-programme/index-eng.aspx). The university will provide the candidate the support necessary to prepare her/his application for the Canada Research Chair Grant ((https://www.uqat.ca/recherche/chaires-de-recherche-du-canada/). The chosen candidate will also be invited to submit an application up to $240 000 at the John-R-Evans Leader fund of the Canadian Foundation of Innovation (https://www.innovation.ca/awards/john-r-evans-leaders-fund).

Applicants who earned their PhD more than 10 years ago but who have had recognised interruptions to their carreer including (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier II chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification process (http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/program-programme/nomination-mise_en_candidature-eng.aspx#s3).
