Joint Faculty Position - Probationary (tenure-track) Assistant Professor

Department of Geography and Environment

Department of Biology

The Departments of Geography & Environment and Biology at The University of Western Ontario (Western) jointly invite applications for a full-time faculty position in the area of Global Environmental Change: Land Surface and Biosphere Modeling at the rank of Assistant Professor (Probationary Tenure-track), effective January 1, 2022, or as negotiated. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience.

We seek applicants whose research engages in earth surface environmental change in the ‘Anthropocene’ using the tools of land surface and earth system models and remote sensing to monitor, model and evaluate land cover change in relation to terrestrial biosphere, hydrosphere and biogeochemical systems. The ideal candidate will focus on ecosystem change, especially as it relates to vegetation dynamics and the global carbon cycle in response to climate change. The successful applicant will strengthen existing areas of research in both Departments and collaborate in interdisciplinary teams to address significant real-world problems.

The ideal candidate will be an emerging or established scholar who has, or is developing, a strong externally-funded program of research and who shows evidence of participation and leadership in international collaborative research projects.  They will demonstrate excellent teaching effectiveness in ecosystem modelling and geospatial analysis that will contribute to the Physical Geography, GIScience and Global Change Biology groups of the two Departments at undergraduate and graduate levels. Their expertise is also expected to contribute to inter-faculty initiatives related to the study and teaching of climate change, environmental science, and sustainability that bridge the two departments.

Applicants for this probationary (tenure-track) appointment must: have completed a PhD degree in Geography, Environmental Science or a related discipline; have post-doctoral and, ideally, faculty level experience; demonstrate excellence or potential for excellence in research through a record of internationally recognized publications in leading journals and have the ability or potential to develop and conduct innovative externally funded research; provide evidence of a strong record of teaching at the university level; and have excellent oral and written communication skills.

The Department of Geography and Environment is a research-intensive department that defines four fields of research: Physical Geography, Geographic Information Science; Environment, Health and Development; and Urban Studies. These support doctoral- and masters-level graduate programs with an enrolment of approximately 75 graduate students. At the undergraduate level, we offer both BSc and BA degrees and a range of modules related to our research areas. The Department has identified urban environments as an overarching research theme and is a designated ESRI Canada Centre of Excellence.

Western’s Department of Biology is an exceptional environment for research and teaching, with over 40 faculty and over 100 thesis based graduate students. We have strong connections with our adjunct colleagues at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, which has a large research campus in London. Among several recognized areas of research strength in the Department, we boast world-class expertise in various aspects of global change biology. Our Department is also home to a consortium of cutting edge research facilities including the Biotron Experimental Climate Change Research Centre, a purpose-built facility that simulates natural environments at a range of scales.

With annual research funding exceeding $220 million, and an international reputation for success, Western ranks as one of Canada's top research-intensive universities. Our research excellence expands knowledge and drives discovery with real-world application. Western also provides an exceptional employment experience, offering competitive salaries, a wide range of employment opportunities and one of Canada's most beautiful campuses.

An application must include the following: (1) Application for Full-Time Faculty Position form; (2) Cover letter addressing how the candidate’s expertise fits this position and complements existing strengths in the two departments; (3) Curriculum Vitae; (4) Research Statement specifying plans for research at Western (up to 2 pages); (5) Teaching Statement summarizing teaching and mentoring experience, evidence of teaching effectiveness, areas of teaching expertise and plans for teaching and training at Western; and (6) names, institutional affiliations and contact information (including email addresses) for three academic referees.  Applications should be emailed to:
