The Department of Environment & Sustainability at Catawba College (“Catawba”) seeks to add a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Energy, Innovation, and Sustainable Technology to its dynamic, collegial, and progressive faculty cohort. This is a full-time, nine-month faculty appointment beginning in January or August, 2022. While teaching introductory and interdisciplinary upper-level courses in the applicant’s areas of strength or interest will be the candidate’s primary responsibilities, Catawba expects the selected candidate to develop and maintain a program of scholarship involving our students as co-participants, in addition to advising and Catawba committee service.

Teaching requirements are a combination of four (4) lecture and/or laboratory sections per semester and independent studies and mentorship on an ad hoc basis. The successful candidate will have a promising record in undergraduate teaching or equivalent professional experience, a history of impactful green technology-based research or innovation programs, student- and intern-centered directed mentorship, and evidence of teamwork as a part of a close-knit academic or professional program. Departmental responsibilities include collaborating on curriculum review and course creation, developing field experiences, advising and mentorship of students, and serving as a point of contact for interested student recruits, among others. College-wide service responsibilities generally include participation on one (1) to two (2) academic committees on a rolling basis.

Candidates with strengths in Sustainability and Renewable Energy, with particular interest in (but not limited to) a combination of renewable energy and innovation (solar, wind, hydro and beyond), storage and transmission systems, grid modernization, emerging materials and technology for energy futures, on- and off-grid energy production and project design and development are particularly encouraged to apply.

Catawba is interested in applicants who will advance our goals for equity, diversity, justice, and inclusion. We strongly encourage applications from the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) community and members of other underrepresented groups. Candidates with experience in working with groups underrepresented in STEM are encouraged. Ph.D. or equivalent degree and professional experience is required (Catawba will accept final stage ABD for application, but must be conferred before employment commences).

Catawba campus solar arrays produce more than one megawatt of power, and these installations are but one example of the widespread campus infrastructure and ethos, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and the environment. We offer a 3-2 BS/MEM collaboration with Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, diverse study abroad opportunities, generous scholarship support, and robust internship programs for undergraduate Environment & Sustainability majors, as well as excellent departmental support to augment faculty teaching and research/advocacy development.

In 1925, Catawba moved and re-opened to its current location in Salisbury, NC, which is about 45 minutes from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte, two hours from the mountains, and four hours from the beaches.

Today, Catawba College has 41 buildings on 276 wooded acres on a residential campus. Catawba is known for its 189 acre on-campus ecological preserve.
