Position: Postdoctoral Research Associate (Entomology/Insect Ecology)
Salary Range: $64,649 to 84,049 per year
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Southeast Area, Southern Insect Management Research Unit, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position. The incumbent will provide direct research support to the Research Leader engaged in the area of behavior, chemical ecology and sustainable pest management of major hemipteran and lepidopteran pests of row crops in the mid-southern United States.
Responsibilities:
• Development of sustainable semiochemical-based trapping methods for insect pests of row crops. Experience conducting research in the areas of behavioral or chemical ecology of arthropod pests of row crops, working in row crop agroecosystems; assisting in developing new methodologies for field-based experiments; and analyzing results and writing manuscripts are required.
• Plan and execute research on behavioral and chemical ecology of arthropod pests of cotton, soybean, corn, sorghum, and other row crops. Experience in chemical ecological and electrophysiological techniques (Electroantennogram, GC-EAD, volatile collections, olfactometer assays) is desirable.
• Perform research on improving the agronomic practices in row crops and investigating the effect of these agronomic practices on multi-trophic interactions.
• Opportunities also exists to work on plant-insect-microbe interactions and integrated pest management of different row crop pests. The incumbent will conduct independent and cooperative research on the areas mentioned above.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in entomology or an equivalent discipline such as ecology, chemical ecology, or a related field of biology or chemistry. Strong written and oral communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals is required. The appointment is funded for an initial period of 13 months but may be extended for up to four years, based on performance.
