Overview

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world's leading conservation organizations, seeks a Conservation Data Analyst/Engineer to join its Global Science team.

Major Function

Help WWF revolutionize the way we use data and technology to identify conservation opportunities and measure and monitor the impacts of our conservation efforts. The Conservation Data Analyst/Engineer will work with the Global Science team and the WWF network to analyze and maintain environmental and socio-economic data including, but not restricted to, WWF acquired data, government supplied data, commercially acquired data sets, and remotely sensed and in-situ spatial data. The Conservation Data Analyst/Engineer will have broad experience with statistics, data visualization, data management, cloud-based data analysis infrastructures, and current data delivery mechanisms. Understanding of conservation issues on global and local scales is an asset, as is experience working with multiple organizations to harmonize data and data management approaches. The key roles of the data analyst/engineer are to analyze and visualize existing data, support the data scientist in developing new methodologies and systems, and maintain and develop data storage and analysis platforms.

Responsibilities
 

  • Support the development and application of data analysis and visualization methodologies with the WWF Conservation Data Scientist, other WWF scientists and program managers. Coordinate across multiple data collecting organizations, to harmonize approaches and data. Perform analyses for select projects; apply advanced statistical and spatial analysis and programming as necessary to assess impacts and identify opportunities. Manage GIS software licensing and distribute software licenses to all users in the Network. Coordinate with software vendors to obtain and renew licenses and to handle support requests. Maintain data repositories, including GIS servers (e.g., Google Earth Engine, ArcGIS Server, and ArcGIS online) by keeping software up to date. Maintain knowledge of other data platforms, including cloud-based platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) and cloud-based relational databases for use as needed. Keep abreast of developments in data analysis and open-source tools for analysis and data visualization (e.g. D3.js, QGIS). Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications
 

  • 4 to 6 years professional data analysis experience or 2 to 4 years' experience with an advanced degree in statistics, computer science, mathematics, environmental science (with a quantitative focus) or related field. Demonstrated expertise in data analysis languages such as SQL, R, Python, and Julia. Knowledge of cloud-based technologies for data analysis. Experience with conservation, biodiversity or ecology projects is an asset. Solid project management skills with the ability to produce high quality work under time constraints. Proven ability to work collaboratively in a matrixed team environment. Excellent interpersonal skills requiring knowing when to use courtesy, tact and/or diplomacy to effectively communicate with all constituents. Ability to demonstrate integrity in deliverables, behavior, and demeanor. Ability to show respect for the organization, the work, the team, and self.
