Lecturer of Biology - Plant Biologist

Employer
Oglethorpe University
Location
Atlanta, Georgia
Salary
TBD
Closing date
Jan 17, 2022

Oglethorpe University welcomes applications for a Lecturer in Biology, starting Fall 2022. Oglethorpe lecturers are full-time contracted instruction-focused faculty with potential for iterative renewal and/or permanent assignment.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach a selection of lab/field-based courses that help students conceptualize plant biology’s contributions to our understanding of the biological world at multiple organizational scales. With this hire, we are deliberately expanding our curriculum to increase emphasis on the use of plant models to understand important biological processes, including those related to ecology. The new faculty member will be responsible for teaching the equivalent of two lectures and three laboratories each semester. We would welcome plans to extend the classroom to include the diverse plant-related field sites throughout the greater Atlanta metropolitan area.

Course enrollments of no more than 24 students support learning environments that are ideal for one-on-one faculty-student collaborations and for implementing other innovative pedagogical strategies. All courses are supported by a Lab Coordinator.  Many courses utilize student peer-instructors, who are trained by the university’s Academic Success Center and who work collaboratively with faculty to promote accessible and inclusive STEM-focused learning environments.  This position also provides an opportunity to serve the needs of our diverse STEM community with innovative/team-based/multidisciplinary teaching methods (such as active learning, course-based undergraduate research and service learning).

Oglethorpe is committed to fostering a campus community and intellectual environment that recruits and maintains diverse faculty and staff. We value faculty mentorship and support faculty teaching and development through the Office of the Provost which works closely with the VP of DEI. Candidates from historically excluded groups, who bring varied life experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Biology or related field.

Compensation: The position comes with a full-time salary/benefits package.

To Apply: Applicants are asked to submit: 1) a letter of interest that addresses their commitment to high-quality inclusive undergraduate instruction. Applicants should also indicate what courses they are prepared to teach. 2) C.V., 3) a statement of teaching philosophy with respect to both classroom and laboratory/field work, 4) a diversity statement with specific examples.  Please combine all four documents into a single pdf and submit to https://oglethorpe.edu/jobs/. In addition, two letters of reference should be submitted here (https://forms.gle/eqtYa29oqjhUkJWq7). Inquiries may be made to Dr. Lea Alford (Search Chair) at lalford@oglethorpe.edu. Review of applications will begin on December 10, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled.  Applications received after December 10 may be considered on a rolling basis.  Oglethorpe University is proud to be an equal opportunity employer committed to achieving a diverse workforce.
