Bates College invites applications from scientists with expertise in environmental chemistry for a tenure-track faculty position. Appointment will be in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (CHEM), and will include service on the Environmental Studies (ES) program committee.
We welcome applications from individuals who are broadly trained Ph.D. scientists from Chemistry, Geochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related fields. The new faculty member will join ongoing cross-STEM initiatives in inclusive pedagogy, equity and inclusion, and curricular renovation. Applicants should have completed graduate-level analytical chemistry coursework including basic chemical and measurement concepts; measurement instrumentation and techniques; and principles, tools, and applications in spectroscopy, electrochemistry, separations, sensors, mass spectrometry and surface characterization.
Bates faculty typically teach five courses per year (laboratory sections count as 0.5 course credits). Teaching responsibilities for this position include courses in introductory chemistry and introductory environmental science, a mid-level analytical chemistry course with a lab, and courses on the application of chemistry to environmental and climatological problems developed through conversations with other faculty sharing interests in environmental science. It is anticipated that some of the courses taught will vary year-to-year but typically the candidate will offer three courses that count in ES every two years that may also be cross-listed in Earth and Climate Sciences (EACS).
The position includes developing an active research program involving undergraduates, and advising theses in both ES and CHEM. Undergraduate advising and service on institutional committees is also part of the work that all faculty share.
Bates College is a residential liberal arts college in Lewiston, Maine with approximately 1800 students; 26.1% identify as black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) and 12.1% are first generation students. The student to faculty ratio is 10:1 and 24% of faculty identify as BIPOC. Lewiston is a diverse and growing city in Maine, two and a half hours north of Boston and 45 minutes from a burgeoning Portland technology start-up scene (e.g. Roux Institute).

Teaching is supported by a new Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning, Community-engaged learning, and study abroad are encouraged and robustly supported.
Bates supports new faculty with a course reduction in the first year of teaching, formal mentoring, and new-faculty development programming. Bates provides tenure-track faculty with a paid pre-tenure leave and generous financial support for post-tenure sabbaticals. Faculty scholarship is supported by start-up packages, the new Bonney Science Center, internal grants, and a robust external grants office. Faculty research is routinely supported by the NSF, NIH, and other external funding sources.
A Ph.D. is required by August 1, 2023. Additional relevant work either before or after graduate school is seen as beneficial but is not required.
