The Program in Environmental Studies (ES) at Bates College seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in environmental science to begin August 2023. The new faculty member will join ongoing cross-STEM initiatives in inclusive pedagogy and curricular renovation. We are especially interested in individuals trained in environmental science who are comfortable working with other natural scientists as well as with social scientists and humanists. A candidate’s field of study may feature but need not be limited to the following: marine, freshwater, polar, glacial, coastal, agricultural, arid, urban, grassland, or forested systems, or foci that could include earth surface processes, ecology, biodiversity, pollution, energy transitions, or public health. We are open to a broad range of methodological approaches and world views that may involve attention to spatial patterns, data visualization, modeling, field studies, traditional ecological knowledge, local ecological knowledge, or the dynamics of social-ecological systems. We seek a candidate who will develop an active scholarly program in their field. We strongly encourage applications from individuals with marginalized identities in environmental science and individuals who may have followed non-traditional pathways to higher education.

The successful teacher-scholar will contribute to an interdisciplinary program in which all students undertake significant coursework in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Teaching responsibilities include five courses per year, which could include the program’s core introductory course in environmental science, mid- and upper-level electives in the candidate’s fields of interest, upper-division courses in the program core, as well as first-year seminars. All faculty are involved in the mentoring of undergraduate research and senior thesis advising as well as institutional service.

Bates College, a private, highly selective, test-optional, residential college in Lewiston, Maine is devoted to undergraduate study in the liberal arts. We bring together students from 48 states and 59 countries, 12% of whom are first generation to college and 27% are US students of color. In addition to expanding the population of students of color on campus by 42% over the past 10 years, Bates was recently chosen to participate in the Schuler Access Initiative to expand and support the number of students from the lowest income and undocumented families in the U.S. over the next decade. In addition, over the past five years, half of the number of new tenure track faculty hired have identified as BIPOC.

The work of creating a more equitable community is supported by an HHMI Inclusive Excellence grant to support transformation of STEM pedagogy, culture, and practice; a Mellon Foundation Curricular Transformation Grant; and campus discussions sponsored by the Dean of Faculty. Teaching is supported by a new Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning. The college supports faculty scholarship through a variety of avenues: pre-tenure leave, post-tenure sabbaticals, and competitive enhanced sabbaticals; annual funding for travel to conferences; a supportive office for external grant applications; and internal faculty scholarship funds. The search committee is especially interested to learn how an applicant’s strengths and experiences–including in their research, teaching, and/or outreach–can further the college’s commitments to equitable education.
