DESCRIPTION: Cal Poly Humboldt and the Department of Biological Sciences invites applicants for an academic year tenure-track faculty position specializing in Plant Physiology.

Cal Poly Humboldt is home to one of the largest undergraduate Botany programs in the nation. Our program prides itself
in a strong tradition and focus on the organismal biology of different plant, fungal, and algal groups. The ideal candidate
will establish a research program that uses contemporary methods in terrestrial plant physiology, integrating that with
teaching that emphasizes all aspects of plant physiology.

RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS: We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor rank; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee's qualifications and experience. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Ph.D. or equivalent degree in plant biology, botany or related field from an
accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, degree requirements must be completed by the date of appointment.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following required qualifications:

• Expertise in terrestrial plant physiology;
• Experience with, or potential for teaching plant physiology and botany;
• Experience with, or potential for developing and teaching labs which include hands-on activities and living/fresh
plant material;
• Experience with, or potential for establishing an active research program with external support that can be
sustained at a primarily undergraduate institution;
• Experience with, or potential for promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of
individuals from diverse backgrounds and is consistent with the department's mission;
• Experience with, or potential for collaborating effectively with diverse colleagues in an interdisciplinary
framework;
• Experience with, or potential for supporting students from systematically marginalized communities through
mentorship and use of inclusive pedagogical strategies;
• Experience with, or potential for involving undergraduate and graduate students in research; and
• Experience with, or potential for teaching using a variety of methodologies.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

• Experience creating or capacity to build a research program focusing on terrestrial plant physiology, with
applications in fields including, but not limited to, form-function relationships, ecophysiology, biochemical
ecology;
• Familiarity with, or interest in developing, operational skills for scanning and transmission electron microscopes;
and
• Commitment to participating in professional development opportunities that build effectiveness in areas of
inclusion, intercultural communication, and advancing diversity.

Working in the state of California is a condition of employment for this position. Even if part or all of an employee's assignment can be performed remotely, the employee must maintain a permanent residence in the state of California. The employee must be able to accept on-campus instruction, as assigned, and come to campus when needed.

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. Instructional assignments may include: Plant Physiology, General Botany, and other courses in their area of expertise,
including graduate-level courses. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the
department and students.

The primary professional responsibilities of faculty members are teaching, research, and scholarly activity, as well as service responsibilities including advising of students, participation in campus and California State University system- wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful faculty member. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research and other scholarly activities required for retention, tenure, and promotion.

Cal Poly Humboldt also continues to build unique and innovative learning opportunities for students, bridging the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. Humboldt is a leader in “learning communities” that build relationships between students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the community. These communities incorporate environmental and social responsibility.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Dedication to superior instruction of undergraduates is a long-standing tradition at Humboldt. The Department of Biological Sciences is known for providing undergraduate students with balanced and well-rounded degrees in Botany, Biology, Marine Biology, and Zoology and we also have a robust Masters-level graduate program in Biology (including Botany). Physical resources include molecular biology and tissue culture labs; growth chambers; scanning and transmission electron microscopes; the largest vascular plant herbarium in the California State University system; the Dennis K. Walker greenhouse, which hosts the largest greenhouse teaching collection in the California State University system; and a surrounding “natural laboratory” of diverse ecosystems for field-based teaching and research. Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi'ni (over in the woods). The Cal Poly Humboldt campus in Northern California is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities. Humboldt currently has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and has over 30 Native American faculty and staff many from local area California Indian tribes. Humboldt is home to a number of leading Native American programs including the Indian Tribal Education and Personnel Program (ITEPP) and the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP).
