DESCRIPTION: Cal Poly Humboldt and the Department of Biological Sciences invite applicants for a tenure track faculty position specializing in Marine Phycology.

Cal Poly Humboldt has a large and growing Marine Biology program and is home to one of the largest undergraduate Botany programs in the nation, which prides itself on a strong traditional focus on organismal biology of plant, fungal, and algal groups. The study of marine algae is highly relevant to both the Marine Biology and Botany programs. The ideal candidate will conduct research that uses contemporary methods in phycology and will integrate that with teaching that emphasizes the diversity of marine algae and their importance to the fields of marine biology and botany.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Ph.D. or equivalent degree in phycology, botany, marine biology or related field from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, degree requirements must be completed by the date of appointment.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:

• Expertise in marine phycology with strong algal identification skills;
• Experience with, or potential for teaching phycology and botany classes;
• Experience with, or potential for developing and teaching labs based on living algal and plant material;
• Experience with, or potential for teaching with a variety of methodologies;
• Experience with, or potential for supporting students from systematically marginalized communities through
mentorship and use of inclusive pedagogical strategies;
• Experience with, or potential for promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of
individuals from diverse backgrounds and is consistent with the department's mission;
• Experience with, or potential for establishing an active research program focused on marine algae, with external
support that can be sustained at a primarily undergraduate institution;
• Experience with, or potential for involving undergraduate and graduate students in research; and
• Experience with, or potential for collaborating with diverse colleagues in an interdisciplinary framework.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

• Experience creating or capacity to build a research program with applications to fields including, but not limited
to, ecology, evolutionary biology, systematics, physiology, biogeography, or conservation biology;
• Field and lab phycology skills;
• Interest and ability to teach a broad range of courses (major, general education, etc.); and
• Commitment to participating in professional development opportunities that build effectiveness in areas of
inclusion, intercultural communication, and advancing diversity.

Working in the state of California is a condition of employment for this position. Even if part or all of an employee's assignment can be performed remotely, the employee must maintain a permanent residence in the state of California. PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and building a strong research program. Instructional assignments may include: Phycology, General Botany, and other courses in their area of expertise. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship, and creative activity; and service to the University, professional and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities required for retention, tenure, and promotion.

Cal Poly Humboldt also continues to build unique and innovative learning opportunities for students, bridging the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. GENERAL INFORMATION: Superior instruction of undergraduates is a long-standing tradition at Cal Poly Humboldt. The Department of Biological Sciences is renowned for providing students with balanced and well-rounded degrees in Botany, Biology, Marine Biology, and Zoology. We also have a robust Master's-level program including expertise in Botany, Zoology, and Marine Biology. Physical resources include the Telonicher Marine Laboratory and a 90 ft. oceangoing vessel for facilitating marine sciences; a surrounding “natural laboratory” of diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystems for field-based teaching and research; molecular biology and tissue culture facilities; growth chambers; scanning and transmission electron microscopes; the largest vascular plant herbarium in the California State University system; and the Dennis K. Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi'ni (over in the woods). The Cal Poly Humboldt campus in Northern California is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities. Humboldt currently has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and has over 30 Native American faculty and staff many from local area California Indian tribes.
