Assistant Professor Positions in Weed Science
The Department of Horticulture and Crop Science at The Ohio State University is seeking applications for two tenure-track 9-month faculty positions in the discipline area of Weed Science at the Assistant Professor level. Details on both positions are outlined below. Assistant Professor – Extension Weed Science in Row and Pasture Crops
This position contains a 70% Extension, 30% research appointment. The successful candidate is expected to: establish a nationally recognized applied research and extension program focused on weed management within sustainable cropping systems for agronomic crops, forage, and pasture. Research areas may include but are not limited to: herbicide efficacy and development of effective weed management systems; alternative weed management tools and innovative new technologies; integrative weed management systems; herbicide resistance management and mitigation; weed ecology and seedbank management. The candidate is expected to provide statewide, regional, and national leadership that supports and strengthens the work of the Ohio State University Agronomic Crops Team (http://agcrops.osu.edu) in developing and disseminating current science-based information and technologies aimed at improving agronomic crop production systems; interact with producers, industry representatives, and producer organizations and with state and regional agencies as appropriate to facilitate technology transfer and adoption of recommended practices; mentor graduate students and acquire extramural funding to support research and extension programs.
Assistant Professor – Weed Ecology and Management
This position contains a 20% Extension, 50% research, and 30% teaching appointment. The successful candidate is expected to establish an externally funded and nationally recognized program focused on developing weed management strategies that contribute to the development of climate-resilient and diversified cropping systems, and mitigate evolving herbicide resistance issues. Research areas could include but are not limited to: development of ecological approaches to adapting cropping communities to abiotic and biotic stresses; landscape scale modeling of crop and weed performance and weed population dynamics in response to climate change; strategies that increase cropping system competitiveness with weeds; innovative non-chemical management technologies, especially as related to weed seedbank management. The successful candidate is expected contribute to the Department’s teaching program by teaching two undergraduate or graduate courses per year that contribute to the core curriculum or are in the candidate’s area of expertise. Advising and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students is also expected. The candidate will be expected to disseminate research findings to stakeholders through OSU Extension teams and train Extension Educators in ecological approaches to cropping system and weed management and applicable technologies using appropriate contemporary methods of communication and information transfer.
The minimum qualification for each position is an earned Ph.D. in weed science or a closely related discipline upon the start date. Desirable qualifications include knowledge of weed ecology and management in agronomic and/or pasture crop production systems; successful grant writing experience and knowledge dissemination; experience in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses and advising students; experience in successful collaborative efforts; experience interacting with stakeholders, farmers, and industry personnel.
