The Bates College Mathematics Department invites applications for an Assistant Professor, beginning August 2023. We seek candidates whose work involves statistics and analysis of environmental data.

Candidates with demonstrated success in teaching and/or supporting marginalized, first generation and historically underrepresented students are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates should show promise of excellence and innovation in both teaching and scholarship.

Candidate Credentials. Candidates should have completed their Ph.D. in statistics, mathematical sciences, data science, environmental science, or a related field by August 1st, 2023. They should be prepared to teach introductory and advanced courses involving statistics and data analysis, and should be able to contribute to the general education curriculum. Connections to other disciplines are expected, including teaching cross-listed courses and advising theses. A joint appointment in both mathematics and a related discipline is possible. Related disciplines include, but are not limited to, Biology, Chemistry, Digital and Computational Studies, Environmental Studies, Earth and Climate Sciences, and Neuroscience.

In 2018, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute awarded Bates an Inclusive Excellence grant to transform the STEM culture at Bates. Areas of focus include updating the ways that faculty approach their work with students, expanding existing programs for student mentoring and leadership, and redefining the first-year science curriculum.

Bates College is situated in Lewiston, a diverse and growing city in Maine that is located two and a half hours north of Boston and 45 minutes from a burgeoning Portland technology start-up scene. The full time teaching load at Bates is 5 courses per academic year (either 2-3 or 2-2-1), reduced to four courses in the first year of a tenure-track appointment. Faculty at Bates also advise senior theses and capstone seminars. Funds for scholarly work are available to all faculty. Bates is a highly selective liberal arts college and will provide an excellent climate for professional development and scholarship. Candidates may find information about current Bates salaries and benefits in Part 2 of the Bates Faculty Handbook.

Review of applications begins on January 2, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.
Applications should include the following:

  • A cover letter summarizing your qualifications, both scholarly and pedagogical, for this position as well as your interest in teaching at a small liberal arts college such as Bates College;
  • A teaching statement that includes a description of how your teaching can contribute to a campus community that values equity and inclusion;
  • A research statement that describes your work in a way that is accessible to a hiring committee drawn from a broad mathematical audience;
  • A current C.V.;
  • A list of references. After candidates have been selected for an initial video-conference, they will be asked to submit letters of reference. Those not selected at this time will be notified.

Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check.
