A 12-month professional practice (non-tenure track) faculty position is available in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University with dual responsibilities as the Director of the OSU Chadwick Arboretum (https://chadwickarboretum.osu.edu/) and teaching within the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science (https://hcs.osu.edu).

The Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens is a 30-acre living resource for education, research, outreach, and recreation within The Ohio State University’s campus in Columbus, Ohio. It is a cherished urban green space used by OSU faculty, students, and a diverse group of external stakeholders. It is home to many themed gardens and collections, including a green roof garden and labyrinth garden. Chadwick is also home to the OSU Cultivar Trial Gardens, which are utilized each year in collaboration with breeding companies to evaluate ornamental bedding plant landscape performance and consumer preference. The location of the cultivar trials in Columbus provides a unique opportunity for national and international audiences to view the trials as part of AmericanHort’s Cultivate conference programming each year.

 

Specific responsibilities of the position will include:

60% Teaching Appointment

  • Teach undergraduate courses in the areas of landscape design and management, woody and herbaceous plant identification, and/or plant propagation.
  • Mentor undergraduate students.
  • Collaborate with OSU faculty and staff, state-wide educators, and the Ornamental Plant Germplasm Center to conduct relevant trials and programming.

 

40% Administrative Appointment

  • Serve as the Sandy and Andy Ross Endowed Director for the Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens, which includes setting direction on program priorities, providing oversight for plant collections, and garden planning to enhance student learning opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the arboretum Curator and Operations staff to implement enhancements.
  • Supervise Education and Program staff for arboretum-initiated educational programming and connecting departments/units/faculty with teaching, Extension, and research opportunities using the arboretum.
  • Develop opportunities and programs to maximize the use of the Chadwick Arboretum as a living classroom within the campus and the broader community.
  • Promote the Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens to colleagues as a teaching, research, Extension, and outreach resource.
  • Provide leadership for arboretum committees/governance.
  • Support OSU cultivar trials annually in collaboration with Extension faculty.
  • Mentor undergraduate interns and Chadwick Arboretum staff.
  • Publish and disseminate cultivar trial results and other educational arboretum resources.
  • Assist the CFAES Office of Advancement with obtaining extramural funds to further support and expand program activities of the arboretum.
  • Maintain and build connections with existing and new donors, collaborators, and volunteers including the Master Gardener Volunteers.
  • Participate in leadership activities in regional, national, and international professional associations including AmericanHort, American Society for Horticultural Science, American Public Gardens Association, National Association of Landscape Professionals, and the Ohio Green Industry Association.

 

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a PhD in horticulture, plant science, or related field. Teaching experience and experience with public garden management is desired.
