The Bates College Program in Environmental Studies seeks to hire a one-year, full-time, Assistant Professor in environmental field science to begin August 1, 2023. We are looking for a person who works in an area of applied environmental science. The successful candidate will teach a normal five-course load over Bates’ fall, winter, and May semester (“short term”), and will advise undergraduate research students. Courses taught will include an introductory environmental science course and two other courses currently in our curriculum. Candidates may also propose one or two courses in their area of expertise. A demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching and a record of interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching are important.

We specifically seek applications from individuals with the ability to contribute to the continuing commitment of both the Environmental Studies Program and Bates to equity and inclusion, social and cultural diversity, and the transformative power of our differences. The search committee expects applicants to identify their strengths and experiences in these areas and describe how their research, teaching, and/or outreach can further this goal. For more information about the program, see the program website: http://www.bates.edu/environment/

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD or be ABD by August 1, 2023.

Application Instructions

Review of applications begins on March 1, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit the following: a cover letter (including a brief overview of scholarly work and a list of potential courses), curriculum vitae, statement on teaching philosophy (1-2 pages), and a description of experience and interest in advancing the goals of equity and inclusion described above. Applicants should also arrange for two letters of recommendation in the event that the search committee requests them.
