Assistant or Associate Professor of Invasive Species Biology and Management
The Department of Ecosystem Science and Management (ESM) in the College of Agricultural Sciences at https://psu.edu seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor of Invasive Species Biology and Management. This is a tenure-track position with a 60% research / 40% extension appointment. The position comes with a competitive start-up package and salary based on 36-weeks of service annually, which can be supplemented with additional salary up to a total of 48 weeks from external competitive grants and contracts.
The successful candidate will have a research program that is focused on risk and impact assessment of Alien Invasive Species (AIS), and methods for managing the spread of AIS. This call is broad in the sense that individuals may have a background in any discipline concerned with AIS (natural or social sciences, engineering, landscape architecture, etc.), may work in any type of ecosystem (e.g., forests, soils, lakes) on any group of organisms (e.g., plants, arthropods, microbes, fish, mammals) using tools that span genes to ecosystems (e.g., eDNA, population models, community ecology, ecosystem risk assessment). Regardless of the discipline, organism, ecosystem, or set of tools used, the candidate's research program should expand ESM's mission to maintain healthy forests, clean water and soil, and abundant native fish and wildlife populations using a research program that bridges basic and applied science to aid management and policy decisions.
To complement their research program, the successful candidate will also develop an active extension program as part of Penn State's Forests and Wildlife extension program (https://extension.psu.edu/forests-and-wildlife). The individual will engage with Pennsylvania's state management agencies, private landowners, indigenous peoples, and/or local industries on horizon scanning, risk assessment, prevention, early detection, eradication, or long-term control of AIS. Extension programming could include formation and coordination of citizen-science monitoring groups, preparation and delivery of educational materials (e.g., outreach publications, popular press articles, fact sheets, online guides and resources, web-articles, videos), non-formal/non-classroom instruction (e.g., online non-credit courses, webinars, face-to-face meetings, on farm/site trouble shooting visits, and seminars), new applied research (e.g., literature reviews, investigations on educational methods and effectiveness), or other forms of service to the stakeholder groups.
This hire is part of a college-wide effort to enhance expertise in the control of pest species (e.g., invasive species, soil and water-borne pathogens, wildlife/fish diseases), and to develop methods to manage and mitigate their impacts on society. It is anticipated this hire will help coalesce a group of faculty who share mutual interest in invasive species as part of the College's Institute for Sustainable Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Science (https://agsci.psu.edu/safes).
Qualifications. Individuals must have a Ph.D. in any discipline that works on AIS (natural or social sciences, engineering, landscape architecture, etc.) with degree requirements complete by the application date. A strong publication record is required, as is evidence of (or potential for) extramural funding from local and federal agencies that support AIS research and management. Candidates who are quantitative and use a variety of approaches in their work (experiments, observational studies, data syntheses, predictive modeling) are preferred, as are individuals who have experience working with policymakers and the general public to develop AIS management plans.
Application. Candidates should apply for job REQ_0000040487 at https://hr.psu.edu/careers. In addition to applying online, candidates should forward the following application materials to Mary Jo Schillings at mjs9psu.edu: (1) cover letter, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) names and contact information for three references, (4) three representative publications, (5) a statement of research experiences/future interests, and (5) a statement of extension interests and plans. Applicants should provide evidence, either woven through their application materials or as a separate diversity statement, of a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusive excellence, and belonging and of engagement which creates an inclusive environment in their classroom, department, and the University. Employment will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
Applications are due by March 17, 2023.
