Position Overview

The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) offers a unique opportunity for a UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Area IPM Entomology Advisor. UC ANR operates a statewide network of researchers and educators dedicated to the development and application of knowledge to address local agricultural, environmental and health issues. Over 150 UC ANR UCCE advisors conduct research, outreach and education from locally based CE offices serving all 58 counties from 70+ locations throughout the state. By working and living among those we serve, UC ANR expands the University of California's reach to engage all people and communities in California, ensuring equal access to the UC system.

Purpose. The Area IPM Entomology Advisor will implement an innovative extension education and applied research program to address pest management issues facing agriculture.

Research and extension will address high-priority issues related to ecologically and economically sound integrated pest management programs. Emphasis will be on interdisciplinary projects that affect perennial nut and fruit crops, such as, pistachio, almond, walnut, stonefruits, and grapes.

This is an exciting opportunity to do research and provide research-based education on pest management practices to enhance production efficiency and profitability while protecting human-health and the environment. There are numerous opportunities to build partnerships with PCA's, growers, commodity groups, state and federal agencies, and other interested parties.

The advisor joins a team of highly motivated UCCE colleagues who are passionate about their work and are dedicated to making a difference within the communities and throughout California. The potential for collaborative projects within the UC ANR system is nearly limitless. The Area Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Cooperative Extension (CE) Advisor for Entomology will be a key member of the UC Statewide IPM Program's (UCIPM) academic team.

Counties of Responsibility. This position will be strategically located at the Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center and provide support for the San Joaquin Valley including Fresno, Madera, Tulare, and Kings counties.

Reporting Relationship: The Area IPM Entomology Advisor is headquartered at the Kearney Agricultural Research & Extension Center. Academically, the position reports to the UC IPM program director who is responsible for matters concerning evaluations, merits, and promotions.
Qualifications and Skills Required
Required Qualifications

Education: A minimum of a Master's degree in entomology, pest management, or closely related field is required at the time of appointment.
Additional Requirements

• Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability and property damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle.
• A broad understanding of IPM principles, including knowledge of crop production, cultural and biological controls, and pesticide use.
• The CE Advisor must obtain a Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) prior to applying pesticides or supervising the application of any pesticide.

Desired Experience

• Ability to identify insects at the family level and be familiar with their life history
• Practical field experience in entomology pest management and collaborating with private industry.
• Experience in conducting field research in agriculture; planning and implementation of broad, large-scale research and extension programs.
• An understanding of how public policy impacts agricultural management and producer decision-making.
• Passion and desire to pursue a career in Cooperative Extension.
• Experience in building partnerships and with multidisciplinary teams.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively plan projects, manage teams and implement an applied research and outreach program, including setting measurable goals and objectives.

Salary & Benefits

Salary: The salary range for this Cooperative Extension Advisor position is Assistant Rank, Step I ($71,200) to Step VI ($94,000). Step placement in the advisor series is based on applicable experience and professional qualifications.
