Job Summary: This job requires high-level, independent, professional scientific work that includes coordinating projects; designing, implementing, and managing research; analyzing and interpreting data; and preparing technical publications, presentations, and other products.

 

Job duties include:

 

  • Analyzes and interprets data on water quality in the Indian River Lagoon and the six estuarine planning units in the Northern Coastal Basins, including preparing data summaries, estimating nutrient loads, creating and delivering oral presentations, and drafting peer-reviewed publications. Manages data on water quality collected by the monitoring networks operating in the Indian River Lagoon and Northern Coastal Basins. Interprets data, generates information, and develops projects to fill gaps in our understanding of water quality, sediment quality, and biological quality in the District’s estuaries. Maintains scientific credibility in their field of interest by reviewing scientific/technical publications; attending meetings, seminars, and other related training; and preparing and delivering technical presentations at professional conferences/workshops. Collaborates with biologists, statisticians, and engineer-modelers in the development and application of empirical or mechanistic models for estuaries.

Ability to: Communicate and work well with others as a team; independently design, implement, analyze, and report on large-scale ecological processes and overall effect of management actions; critically evaluate or model the fate and transport of nutrients within watersheds; endure harsh outdoor environments in uncomfortable/extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and remote locations; lift and/or move equipment; maintain a priority of safety and make effective, consistent, and defensible decisions in the field; operate or learn to operate vehicles/vessels to access sites (e.g., boats, airboats, four-wheel drive trucks, all-terrain vehicles, and marsh masters).

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

A master's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, limnology, chemistry, botany, ecology, environmental science, or a related field with an emphasis on environmental science, four years of experience in natural resource management, and scientific papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

 

A doctorate from an accredited college or university in biology, limnology, chemistry, botany, ecology, environmental science or a related field with an emphasis on environmental science, three years of experience in natural resource management, and scientific papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

 

Professional experience in environmental protection or research can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Additional Details:

 

Salary Range: $62,961.60 - $81,848.00

 

Starting salary is based on qualifications and experience.
