The Department of Biology at Kalamazoo College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level beginning September 2024. Ph.D. (or evidence of imminent completion) required; post doctoral experience preferred. Salary is competitive and consistent with level of experience. Candidates are expected to have high aptitude and interest in undergraduate teaching, a commitment to the liberal arts, and a desire to involve undergraduates in scholarship both inside and outside the classroom. Kalamazoo College has made a commitment to inclusive excellence. We especially encourage applications from candidates whose intellectual and pedagogical approaches to the discipline will be effective in attracting and retaining historically underrepresented students. The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong commitment to working with students, faculty and staff from diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds
We seek a broadly trained invertebrate biologist whose research includes field work. The successful hire will teach in both the core and advanced biology curriculum. Core responsibilities will include regular participation in a first-year biology course (familiarity with the 2011 AAAS Vision and Change report would be an asset) and creation of a core, 200-level organismal biology course with associated lab. In addition, our new colleague will teach at least one 300-level lecture/laboratory course in their area of expertise, and assist with other core curricular needs as necessary.
Kalamazoo College is a highly selective nationally known liberal arts college offering an integrated undergraduate experience that weaves a traditional liberal arts curriculum into educational experiences in both domestic and international settings. The biology department graduates about 50 majors each year, including many who pursue graduate-level work in the discipline. It is a member of the Posse Program and home of the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership. The campus is located in a diverse and vibrant city in southwestern Michigan, midway between Chicago and Detroit, and is the home of the Kalamazoo Promise. The Kalamazoo area encompasses a community of 335,000, which supports several college and university campuses along with numerous civic arts and cultural associations. Thirty-five miles from Lake Michigan, the area offers many opportunities for outdoor activities. The college’s 145-acre Lillian Anderson Arboretum, a 10-15 minute drive from campus, provides substantial opportunities for teaching and research in a field setting.
Review of applications will commence October 1, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. All applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests/plan, teaching philosophy (with discussion of diversity/equity/inclusion), and transcripts from both undergraduate and graduate school (unofficial is acceptable). Three letters of recommendation, addressed to the Biology Search Committee, are required. Please email in PDF form to BiologySearch@kzoo.edu with the subject line in the format: lastname_firstname.
