Frontiers of Science is a one-semester course that integrates modern science into the Core Curriculum of Columbia College in order to introduce exciting scientific ideas and inculcate scientific habits of mind. The program seeks to appoint three instructors at the rank of Lecturer in Discipline, These are full-time positions with multi-year renewal contingent on successful review.
We invite applications from qualified candidates with significant experience teaching general science, multi-disciplinary courses to both science and non-science students. Frontiers of Science instructors will be appointed in an appropriate natural science department and teach two seminar sections (up to 22 students each) each semester. In addition, they attend the weekly course lecture, faculty meeting and pedagogical seminar, participate in curriculum development for the course, which includes course-wide assessments, and carry out research in their field of interest. Finally, the instructors we seek will have additional responsibilities for leading other instructors in constructing common exams and coordinating other course-wide assessments, organizing student-faculty interaction opportunities, field trips, and public outreach via special events and social media, and working with non-traditional students through a novel course entitled Foundations of Science. Prior experience with such tasks is strongly preferred.
Frontiers of Science instructors receive a competitive salary and benefits.
