The Department of Biology at Franklin & Marshall College invites applications for a tenure-track position in MICROBIAL ECOLOGY with expertise in the ecology and evolution of infectious diseases, beginning August 2025. Appointment is for nine months per year. The rank will be Assistant Professor or Instructor depending on qualifications. Applicants should possess or be close to completing a doctorate degree. We seek a teacher-scholar who can establish an active research program that engages undergraduates and can develop a dynamic teaching program that includes an introductory course in ecology, evolution, and diversity, upper-level electives in their area of expertise, and courses in the College’s general education program. In support, we provide a research laboratory, generous start-up funds, access to confocal and electron microscopes, staffed greenhouse and vivarium, BSL-2 facility, temperature-controlled walk-in chambers, resources for tissue culture, support for travel to conferences, and summer support for undergraduate researchers.  Opportunities also exist to contribute to interdisciplinary programs, including public health, data science, and environmental science.  Franklin & Marshall College is located in Lancaster PA, consistently ranked as one of the best small cities in the nation.

Candidates must submit the following items electronically via Interfolio:  (http://apply.interfolio.com/148570): a cover letter; curriculum vitae; graduate transcript(s) (unofficial copies are acceptable); a holistic statement on your approach to inclusive excellence in teaching and student success; a research statement that highlights the potential for faculty-student collaboration; teaching evaluations and/or observations (if available); and one list of three reference names (NOTE: letters of reference will be solicited at a later stage, and once they are solicited referees will need to supply them within two weeks). For full consideration applications should be received by September 23, 2024.

Qualifications of each applicant will be assessed holistically, with particular consideration of an individual’s record working with students and colleagues from diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds. We will also consider experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to academic success. Pursuant to providing a safe and productive learning, living and working community, we conduct background investigations for all prospective applicants being considered for employment.
