Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Aquatic Ecology
Lawrence University of Wisconsin, a selective undergraduate liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in Appleton, Wisconsin, invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor of Biology (aquatic ecology) to begin September 1, 2025. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in aquatic ecology or closely related field prior to the time of appointment.  We seek an individual who is passionate about teaching and working with undergraduate students in a liberal arts setting, an active and engaged scholar, and an effective mentor for students from diverse backgrounds.
Primary responsibilities include teaching with active learning methods, leading occasional tutorials and mentoring student research projects; assessing student learning; advising and mentoring students; assisting in curricular planning; and departmental and institutional service. Teaching load is two non-lab courses (or one course with two lab sections) per trimester on a 10-week trimester calendar. Laboratory space, funds to support research, and support for professional development are available. The successful candidate will also participate in Lawrence’s flagship First-Year Studies program. The First-Year Studies curriculum is an interdisciplinary introduction to the liberal arts intended to support new students’ fundamental skills as readers, writers, and thinkers. The successful candidate will teach BIOL 330: Aquatic Ecology, one introductory biology course, and upper-level courses in their area of expertise. In addition, they will contribute to the Environmental Sciences program and co-direct Lawrence’s signature Marine Term, which is traditionally run in the spring term every other year and requires competency in diving on SCUBA.
Candidates should have the ability and desire to engage and mentor undergraduates in collaborative research, and otherwise connect scholarship with teaching. Laboratory space and start-up funds are available for establishing a research program. The Department of Biology has excellent facilities to support faculty research and teaching, including state-of-the-art facilities for use in cell culture work and several model genetic and ecological systems, biological imaging, and plant and animal terrestrial and aquatic science research. Lawrence owns 5 vessels ranging from smaller motorboats and trailers for field trips and research on small lakes, to a 23-foot Boston Whaler, and a 22-ft enclosed cabin vessel.
Candidates should submit the following at https://lawrence.peopleadmin.com/ : (1) a letter explaining their past experience and interest in this position at Lawrence, (2) a curriculum vitae, including names and contact information for three individuals who can be solicited for letters of recommendation at a later stage in the search process (two of whom can attest specifically to teaching), (3) a single PDF with separate statements on teaching, scholarship, and diversity, and (4) graduate transcripts. The diversity statement should describe the candidate’s experience related to addressing issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in an academic setting and ways that they would contribute to these efforts at Lawrence. In their teaching statement, candidates must address their commitment to fostering a truly engaged and supportive experience for a diverse community of learners. Candidates are encouraged to read more about Lawrence at https://lawrence.peopleadmin.com as well as www.lawrence.edu and Colleges That Change Lives. Applications will be evaluated starting September 15, 2024. For further information, please contact the Search Committee chair, Alyssa Hakes (alyssa.hakes@lawrence.edu).
