The Department of Marine Science within the Gupta College of Science at Coastal Carolina University invite applications for a nine-month tenure track Assistant Professor position beginning in August 2025. Applicants with a Ph.D. in marine science, oceanography, ocean engineering, or a related field are invited to apply. This is a joint appointment between the Departments of Marine Science (MSCI) and Physics and Engineering Science (PHYS/ENGR). The primary department for promotion and tenure is the Department of Marine Science. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses across our degree offerings (B.S., M.S., Ph.D.), which may include introductory marine science classes, an upper-level marine systems science lecture and laboratory, an upper level water resources engineering lecture, as well as upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses within the applicant's areas of expertise.
We invite applicants from all areas of marine science, oceanography, and/or ocean engineering that would complement our existing faculty expertise. Preferred applicants are expected to possess a research background that applies modern technology with an interdisciplinary multivariate approach which integrates biotic and abiotic factors, geographic information science tools, and quantitative considerations of management and policy issues that are of immediate and socially relevant concern in the southeast Atlantic region. Candidates with expertise to monitor and predict dynamic coastal zone interactions are especially encouraged. The new faculty member is expected to develop a viable externally funded research program that actively involves both undergraduate and graduate students.
The Gupta College of Science includes an emerging Engineering Science program and provides vessel support for teaching and research ranging from small skiffs to a 50-ft. aluminum vessel with an A-frame. The Burroughs and Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies within the Gupta College of Science also offers the potential for collaboration with faculty engaged in related issues. The University manages the Waites Island Anne Tilghman Boyce Coastal Reserve, an undeveloped complex of ocean frontage, fresh and saltwater marshes, tidal creeks, and upland forests, that provides teaching and research opportunities.
We seek a highly motivated individual with a commitment to undergraduate and graduate education that embraces the teacher-scholar model and provides active learning experiences in classroom and field settings especially through research opportunities.
