As Stanford University, Chris Field and Katharine Mach have two postdoctoral openings for work on the carbon storage capacity of the terrestrial biosphere. Please see the full position description below. The scope of research is focused on the spatial distribution of this capacity across forests, croplands, and grasslands. Areas of inquiry will include permanence risks (e.g., related to fire and drought), feasible rates of storage, and the potential of different management actions.

Postdoctoral position description: The Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment has an immediate opening for a full-time postdoctoral researcher. The researcher will work on a project evaluating the carbon storage capacity of the terrestrial biosphere. Capitalizing on the potential of land-based carbon storage is an active area of climate-solutions research and emerging climate policies around the world. Many lines of evidence point to opportunities for building substantial carbon sinks through reforestation and improved management of forests and agricultural soils. Relatively little is known, however, about the ultimate capacity of the terrestrial biosphere to sequester carbon. Increasingly, understanding this potential for effective carbon removal is critical in informing policy and investment decisions. This research, funded by the Climate and Land Use Alliance, will involve (1) mapping the spatial distribution of carbon losses and gains in the terrestrial biosphere, (2) evaluating permanence risks and stability of extra carbon stored, as well as feasible rates of storage, and (3) analyzing the potential of different management actions, along with constraints and enablers in implementation. The research will include engagement with nongovernmental organizations and government agencies developing policies and approaches for land-based climate mitigation. The person who fills this position can be an expert in any topic related to the work, including ecosystem, agricultural, or fire modeling. Candidates need to have strong capabilities in spatial science (e.g., remote sensing, GIS), modeling, statistical computing, or data science techniques.

Qualifications of position: The person who fills this position can be an expert in any topic related to the work. Minimum educational qualification is a PhD in a relevant field.
